Thinking about what to do in Mons? If you only just arrived in Mons and want to get some perspective of the city, the Belfry is the perfect place to start. The Belfry Tower is only a short twenty minute walk away from our centrally located hotel in Mons and can be seen from all over the city.

On your way there you will encounter the beauty of Mons narrow cobble stone roads. From the historic city centre you can walk through the city centre up to the hill on which the Mons Bell Tower sits. This Belfry is part of a group of 56 historical buildings designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, in recognition of an architectural manifestation of emerging civic independence from feudal and religious influences in historic Flanders and neighbouring regions of the Duchy of Burgundy. It allows excellent panoramic views all over the city, on good days as far as the French border.

This 87-meter tall bell tower, is a building of both beauty and function. It long served its purpose of warning for fires and other dangers. During the Second World War it alerted citizens of incoming enemy airplanes. As such it has served the city well. Now its 49 chiming bells ring out their traditional melodies every quarter of an hour, in a peaceful manner and purpose.

The building was designed by architecture Louis Ledoux, construction began in 1661 and was completed after his death in 1672. A visit lasts about an hour. Throughout the year, various activities are organized in the garden or inside the building. For example carillon concerts on Sundays, guided tours, banquets and concerts in the garden.
